The Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute (GEBRI) was established in 2000 at the City of scientific research and Technological Applications, Burg Alarab city, Alexandria, Egypt. Since then, GEBRI has been given the mandate to undertake original, state of the art research activities. It was established with dual purposes of promoting research in the modern areas of biological sciences and biotechnology and providing advanced services, training and education for scientists, students and industrial partners. GEBRI consists of 6 scientific departments that focused on four major research areas including, Medical and pharmaceutical Biotechnology Bioprocessing and fermentation technology Environmental Biotechnology Molecular diagnostics (Genomic and Proteomic based). In each area of research, a strong emphasis is placed on a highly innovative and pioneering investigation in the fields of both basic and applied biology. The Institute located in Burgelarab city, which is a unique complex of buildings designed and equipped for studies on various Molecular Biology fields. GEBRI is well equipped with numerous laboratories and facilities, as well as a modern semi-industrial pilot plant for exploring the production of new Bioproducts. About 90 researchers are currently working at the institute. In addition, there are also some graduate students (Ph.D. and M.Sc.) from other universities and research centers, who conducting their research part inside GEBRI. GEBRI staff was able to publish more than 1000 research papers at the national and international levels. In the last 10 years, seven recognized prizes at the national and international levels were achieved by GEBRI staff. Furthermore, about 80 research projects were funded to its researchers from different funding agencies such as; ISESCO, SEDA-MENA, National strategy of GE, US-Egypt fund, German-Egypt fund, China-Egypt fund, France Egypt fund, European Union, NSF, STDF, RDI, Academy of scientific research, Etc. In final words, the researchers, staff, and students of GEBRI are making continuous efforts for developing, striving for renovation and perfection.
